A feature wall is one of the quickest ways to give a room a sense of character. It draws the eye, adds depth and can set the tone for the whole space. The trick is choosing the right wall and the right finish for the way you live.

Pick the wall with purpose

The best feature wall is usually the one your eye already goes to when you enter the room. That might be the wall behind a bed, a sofa, a fireplace or a dining table. Avoid walls broken up by several doors or windows, as the effect gets lost.

Paint: flexible and forgiving

Paint is the simplest and most affordable option, and it is easy to change when your taste moves on. It works well when you want a bold colour without committing to pattern.

  • Choose a shade a few steps deeper than the other walls for a gentle effect
  • Try colour drenching, where the wall, skirting and trim share one colour
  • Consider a painted arch or half-wall block to frame furniture
  • Use a matte or eggshell finish for a soft, modern look

Wallpaper: pattern and personality

Wallpaper brings pattern, texture and storytelling that paint cannot. Botanical prints add life to a bedroom, grasscloth warms up a living room and a playful mural can turn a hallway into a highlight. Modern papers are more durable than ever, and many are washable or easy to remove.

Designer tip

Bring a large sample home and tape it to the wall for a few days. Look at it in the morning and in the evening, because pattern and colour shift with the light.

Panelling: texture and architecture

Timber panelling, from simple vertical battens to classic shaker frames, adds depth and a crafted feel. It can also hide uneven walls and protect high-traffic areas. Panelling looks especially good painted in a rich colour that catches shadows along every edge.

Mix finishes with care

You do not have to choose only one. Panelling on the lower half of a wall with wallpaper above, or limewash paint over textured plaster, can be striking. Keep the palette tight so the combination feels considered rather than busy.

Let the rest of the room support it

A feature wall shines when the rest of the room is calm. Repeat one of its colours in a cushion, a throw or a vase elsewhere in the space so it feels connected, and keep artwork on that wall simple.
